Soft Fears
Fight, flight, freeze and fawn get a lot of attention for being our bodies’ first and loudest responses to dangerous situations. No one really gets to choose which of these Fs our nervous systems will pull out of the hat to keep us alive in the moment, and then the moment is over.
But what about the fear that comes when you knowwwww you’re not actually about to die.
The kids/pets are fed and an overseas world war three hasn’t technically started just yet, or has it. The feeling is vague, not acute, and no one you love is in danger. You’re dealing.
You’re scrolling, self caring, and going for a run.
FEAR CAN BE SOFT
Soft like the fleece of a tv blanket, soft like sleeping in. Soft fear sees the future and the future is fine, but fine will never, ever truly be fine.
THE PURPOSE OF FEAR
Soft fear has a different job than fight, flight, freeze and fawn. Soft fear wakes you up slowly with sweet memories and anxious dreams. Soft fear begs for a bright new passion. Soft fear awakens abandoned ambition.
Soft fear doesn’t want you to die all alone. Soft fear is dying for you to fall back in love with the people you already love.
Soft fear is hungry for more dense nutrition than the gratitude and faith served in a meme. Soft fear opens your heart to pain the world.
Soft fear seeks something you just can’t buy online.
Soft fear might be ennui, or an overwhelmed slump towards being a lump.
But I know and you know,
Soft fear reminds you of Fate.
How does soft fear show up for you? And where would it like you to go?
Skip the run to numb and let’s talk.
